Street Children

An estimated 1.3 million children are on the streets in Pakistan and deprived from their fundamental rights i.e. right of education, health, shelter, proper care and protection moreover they are victims of different kinds of abuses and exploitation including violence and sexual abuse.

One of the most common economic activities done by the children is scavenging for recyclable materials, such as plastic, paper, and metal. Other jobs include cleaning cars; petty vending, selling small items such as balloons or sweets; selling newspapers or flowers; begging; shining shoes; working in small hotels; working on construction sites; and working in roadside stalls or repair shops. Street children, especially the older children, are also sometimes engaged in activities such as stealing, pick-pocketing, drug-peddling, and prostitution, though this is a small proportion. Most of the street children work 8–10 hours total each day in their various economic activities and return to their homes in slums.

How are we helping?

Children of Adam and its partners start the process of bringing street children into safe environment through mobilisation and starting the School Under the Sky(SUS). The SUS are operated at street points such as sidewalks, slums and the railway station. They are usually no more than a rug on the ground or a wall-less, canvass area of shade, but they are the last line of care for children who have fallen through society’s cracks.

The Street Children Centres

Children of Adam and its partners are in process to establish a transitional place for street children in Karachi. The centre will provide education, health care, nutrition and legal help. It also seeks to reunite runaway children with their families. The school Under the Sky are child-friendly and teach children about hygiene and social behavior as well as Urdu, English and Maths. The children are taught in a playful manner at least for two hours. Once these children are regular and learn according to their age then they are integrated into the government schools of their vicinity. This will become a place where children and young people can recover from experiences of abuse, neglect, family breakdown and trauma.

Our Mission is to make a positive and lasting difference through first rate care, ensuring that every vulnerable child and young person can grow, flourish, fulfill their potential and to find the right placement for them, first time.

Please do help us in assisting these children who deserve a better tomorrow.

From only £20 you could help change the life of a street child.
